TAMPA, FLA. – Wake Forest redshirt junior quarterback Sam Hartman passed for three touchdowns and 280 yards to lead the Demon Deacons to a 27-17 victory over Missouri in the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl Friday night at Raymond James Stadium.
The 14th Gasparilla Bowl marked the first time that the event featured a pair of schools from Power 5 conferences with both Wake Forest of the ACC and Missouri of the SEC making their first appearances in the Tampa Bay-area game.
The Demon Deacons (8-5) opened the scoring with an 11-play, 85-yard drive capped off by a 5-yard scoring pass from Hartman – who was named the Gasparilla Bowl’s MVP – to Taylor Morin. Missouri (6-7) countered with a lengthy drive of its own, but the Tigers settled for a 35-yard field goal by Harrison Mevis late in the opening quarter.
Wake Forest added to its lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter when Justice Ellison scored from 1 yard out. The 8-play, 63-yard drive benefited from a Missouri offsides penalty when the Demon Deacons were faced with a fourth-and-one situation at the Tigers’ 15-yard line.
After the teams traded turnovers – Missouri mishandled a punt and Wake Forest was promptly intercepted in the end zone – the Tigers drove 80 yards in seven plays to score on a 1-yard pass from Brady Cook to “Peanut” Houston, chopping Wake’s lead to 14-10 with 2:28 left in the first half.
Missouri grabbed its only lead of the game on its first drive of the third quarter. Cook engineered the drive, rushing and passing for 53 of the 83 yards, before senior running back Cory Schrader ran for the final 4 yards and the touchdown.
Wake countered quickly and regained the lead with Hartman hitting sophomore wide receiver Jahmal Banks for 48 yards, capping off a four-play, 75-yard drive. The point after was missed, snapping a streak of 269 consecutive successful point-after kicks by the Demon Deacons dating back to the 2017 season.
The Demon Deacons put the game away with 2:33 left in the fourth quarter when Hartman and Morin connected for their second score, this time a 16-yard pass that gave Wake a two-possession lead.
Hartman was named the game’s MVP after completing 23 of 36 passes for 280 yards and the three touchdowns. Redshirt junior wide receiver A.T. Perry led the Demon Deacons with a Gasparilla Bowl-record 11 receptions.
Missouri’s Cook led the Tigers’ offense with 29 completions in 48 attempts for 215 yards and one touchdown.

Game Notes:
The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) improves 2-0 in Gasparilla Bowl appearances while the Southeastern Conference (SEC) falls to 1-2.
With a first quarter 5-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Taylor Morin, Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman established a new Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) record with 108 career touchdown passes. He finished the game with three touchdown passes to increase his record total to 110. He broke the previous record of 107 held by Clemson quarterback Taj Boyd.
